About The Illustrator of 'You Are Who You Eat'

ABOUT DEDINI

Dedini when he worked at Disney on Donald Duck shorts
Eldon Dedini worked for several years for Walt Disney on Donald Duck shorts before he began selling cartoons to Esquire. He began working for Playboy in 1959 and became one of their most popular and longest-running cartoonists. His cartoons were published by The New Yorker for over 40 years. He has received the National Cartoonists Society Award for gag cartooning four times. When he passed away in January 2006, he was still regularly contributing cartoons to Playboy and The New Yorker. A number of his works, including a copy of You Are Who You Eat, are now part of the collection of The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at Ohio State University.

A special exhibit honoring the man and his art was held at the Billy Ireland February 13 through May 22, 2016. Author Ina Silvert Hillebrandt was very pleased to attend the opening ceremonies, February 23. Peter Tonguette, of the Columbus Dispatch, had this to say about the exhibit, and Dedini as a man and artist. The free exhibits "Dedini: The Art of Humor" and "Wordless: The Collection of David A. Berona" continued through May 22 at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum in Sullivant Hall, 1813 N. High St., at Ohio State University. Do check it out and go if you can! The Dedini collection is on permanent exhibit.
You get a real picture of the kindness, warmth and impishness of Dedini in a wonderful documentary made the last year of his life, on YouTube. It’s divided into five parts. You'll hear how he began drawing as a young man, how he started his professional career, which took him to newspapers before Disney, and more. You'll hear about the value of persistence and focus, and perhaps above all else, the importance of friends. Eldon loved life. He lived it more fully than most. And he's left us all a rich legacy -- a treasure trove of art, and lessons and an example of how to be.
